Design-Build FAQs

Choosing a partner to design and renovate your kitchen, bath or home is a significant decision, and we want to be transparent with you about our process at every step. Below are the answers to some of the common questions we hear about the design/build remodeling process. If you have a different question, please reach out to us.

  • What will the design portfolio include?

The design portfolio starts with a summary of the project, space, and your priorities and expectations. It then presents 2-3 different design options, each with a top-down space plan and multiple 3D renderings of the proposed design and sample materials.

  • How long will it take to receive the design portfolio?

You can expect to receive the design portfolio 1 week after your home is measured.

After reviewing the designs, you’ll meet with your designer to indicate your preferred direction and/or give feedback on the designs. The design process includes 1-2 rounds of revision if needed.

  • Will you assist with materials selection?

One of the greatest advantages of working with iKitchens Etc. is our expert knowledge of a vast array of products, from cabinets and countertops to flooring and hardware. We’ll help you navigate what could be an overwhelming number of options to quickly home in on high-quality materials and products that best suit your use, style, and budget.

After finalizing your overall design, we typically spend 1-2 hours with you at our design studio to review and select specific materials for your project. Our studio includes many samples of cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, hardware, and fixtures.

  • How long will my kitchen or bathroom renovation project take to complete?

There are many factors that influence the duration of each project. For planning purposes, you can expect a kitchen remodel to take 6-10 weeks and a bath remodel to take 5-8 weeks. Multi-room projects or those with structural changes will take longer than those that have a more limited scope.

We provide a start date and expected completion date for your project prior to signing the contract and are laser-focused on completing our projects on time.

  • Would you be able to take down a wall to open up our space?

Yes. We routinely remove and reconfigure walls as part of our remodeling projects. We also handle the entire permitting process from end to end.

  • Will you replace windows and doors?

Yes. Adding or replacing windows and doors is a typical part of our remodeling process, whether to bring in additional light, increase energy efficiency, or simply to allow for a more seamless design and function of the space.

  • Will you handle the permits and inspections?

Yes, we handle permit applications, approvals, and all needed inspections throughout the project.

  • Are you licensed and fully insured?

Yes! iKitchens Etc. is a licensed Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor (license #214561), and we carry ample insurance to cover not only the work we do in your home but also the products you purchase from us while in storage and transit. Any permitted work is overseen by a licensed Construction Supervisor.

  • What is included in the project estimate? Will costs be itemized, or is it a single project cost?

The estimate you receive breaks the total project scope and cost into major categories of work, including Demo, Cabinetry, Flooring, Plumbing, Electrical, General Carpentry, and more. For each category, the estimated cost includes labor, materials, and any permits needed.

Whenever possible, we base the estimate on the actual cost of client-chosen materials. If a material selection remains to be made, we’ll include an allocation for that item until the actual cost can be determined.

  • Will you be using subcontractors? What work will be subcontracted out?

Our team of skilled tradespeople includes both direct employees and trusted subcontractors, many of whom have worked with us for 15+ years. Your project will have a lead carpenter from iKitchens Etc, who is responsible for all carpentry and cabinet installation, as well as overseeing the work of our specialized subcontractors for plumbing, electrical, plastering, and painting.

  • Can I use my own subcontractor or do part of the work myself?

One of the benefits of partnering with a design/build firm is having a single point of contact for your entire project. Likewise, our ability to ensure that your project is completed on schedule, on budget, and is eligible for our full 1-year warranty requires that we manage the project end-to-end. Therefore, we do not allow homeowners to hire subcontractors during our projects. We will allow the homeowner to handle demolition and/or painting themselves.

  • I don’t live in the house full time. How will the project schedule and progress be communicated?

We set up a dedicated online portal for each project that will be the hub for all our communication, including exchanging messages, regular photos, and a transparent, real-time schedule. It will also be where you make material selections, approve change orders, and receive invoices. You can log in anytime from your computer or mobile app, and you’ll also receive email notifications when there is an update to your project.
